Assessment and Growth Files - The assessment and growth files provide information about specific state assessments by year, subject, and grade at the state, district, or school level. Other categories are by county, economic development region, or charter school authorizers. These data files provide counts, level percentages, average scores, and test code counts in all subgroups. Data with N counts of less than 10 are suppressed.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Data System (ECLDS) is an innovative tool that combines birth through 12th grade data collected by the Minnesota Departments of Education, Human Services, and Health into one database. ECLDS provides reports built upon policy questions and research on child development.
Educators can begin to see information on the participation of children in prekindergarten programming for their local community here. Data are aggregated to protect privacy; however, educators can typically see a great deal of information about their students to inform planning and help illustrate to community stakeholders the importance of early childhood services to school success. With this information, educators can gauge the effectiveness of current programs and design targeted improvement strategies to help students successfully transition from early childhood into K-12. Many districts have been using the ECLDS to share information with school boards, service partners, and funders, to describe their outreach strategies and overall successes with children. It is also possible for districts to see retrospective changes in local policies as the ECLDS includes more data over time. Minnesota has developed the Minnesota Statewide Longitudinal Education Data System (SLEDS), matching student data from prekindergarten through completion of postsecondary education and into the workforce. By bridging existing data with other incoming data, a range of education program and delivery questions can be answered to gauge the effectiveness of current programs and design targeted improvement strategies to help students. For example, SLEDS brings together data from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and the Departments of Education, and Employment and Economic Development, to identify the most viable pathways for individuals in achieving successful outcomes in education and work.

The results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) are released as the Nation’s Report Card, which provides the latest results and reports. The State Profiles tool can be used to find key data about state performance on the NAEP assessments in mathematics, reading, and science at grades 4 and 8. View trends and demographics for each state and compare results to the nation and to other states. NAEP provides a common measure of student achievement nationwide. Because each state has unique assessments with different content and standards, it is impossible to use each state’s assessment results as a means for comparing the achievement of students across the country. However, such comparisons are possible with NAEP because the questions and administration of the NAEP assessments are the same across all states. NAEP data allows us to ask, “How well are the nation’s students performing?” “How do Minnesota students compare to the nation?” “How do Minnesota students compare to other states?”
